How can Ketamine help?

Ketamine is a highly-effective yet often under-utilized option for those that suffer from mental health disorders. In controlled clinical studies ketamine has produced rapid antidepressant effects, making it a beneficial solution for treatment-resistant disorders and those needing immediate relief.

Multiple clinical studies show that Ketamine IV infusions effectively reduce symptoms in hard-to-treat cases of depression that often include depressive episodes and/or suicidality. Quickly addressing critical mental health needs gives our team more time to implement and work through a holistic treatment plan, including therapy and medication management.

“It takes about 10 weeks after starting an antidepressant for about one third of people to get substantially better…we see an effect within a matter of hours with Ketamine.”*

Carlos Zarate, NIH Clinician Scientist

Ketamine works. Here’s how.

Ketamine can provide immediate relief from symptoms related to depression with effects that can be lasting & life-changing.

A 2019 survey found that almost 20% of American adults recently suffered from a depressive episode. For many, the COVID-19 pandemic created more mental health challenges. Early reporting shows the prevalence of depression and anxiety was three times higher in 2020, with severe depression increasing 5X. We want you to know, you are not alone in your struggles with mental health.

Medical professionals often prescribe medication(s) to target imbalances in brain chemicals (serotonin and dopamine) but results vary by patient and it can take weeks to months to a solution for each individual.

While antidepressants are used to balance chemicals, Ketamine can provide immediate impact by changing the way brain cells communicate. Ketamine affects receptors in the brain and targets glutamate, the brain’s most common excitatory chemical messenger. Glutamate strengthens the connections in your brain, playing a key role in how you learn, remember, and respond to experiences. It also helps to produce and balance GABA which is a neurotransmitter that produces a calming effect in the body.

We provide it as a mental health treatment option for only those clients who would benefit from its short-term and lasting effects.

During treatment, Ketamine is administered as an intravenous infusion at a much lower dose than given for anesthesia. Clients who experience relief from depressive symptoms within one to three ketamine treatments will most likely extend these positive and regenerative effects with additional ketamine treatments. While every plan is individualized, clients typically receive 6 doses over a 2-3 week period.

Our Ketamine program is designed to be completed within 7-8 weeks. Successive sessions, as part of an on-going mental health plan, may help prolong the effectiveness of ketamine treatment. This option is available on a case-by-case basis.

Ketamine treats imbalances in three different phases:

Phase 1: Immediate Effect
Activation of the brain’s receptors leading to feeling relaxed & free from pain.

Phase 2: Sustained Effects
Glutamate receptors are increased, helping to restore normal levels of glutamate & GABA. Relaxation is produced along with a sense of well-being.

Phase 3: Long term effects
Once glutamate and GABA levels are restored, new neural receptors begin to grow which relieves depression.

This explains why the impact of Ketamine is both immediate and has longer lasting effects even after the treatment has concluded.
